TPMS for Electric Vehicles

In recent years, EVs (electric vehicles) and cars/trucks powered by hybrid systems are becoming more common. Certain models come standard with a battery-electric or hybrid drivetrain: GMC Hummer; Rivian R1S/RST, Tesla Models 3, S, X, Y; Lucid Ai; Kia EV6; Karma Revero. Others like the Mazda MX-30 are available in different configurations – EV, PHEV (plug-in hybrid) & MHEV (mild hybrid). Many other vehicles come equipped with gas-powered engines standard but offer hybrid powertrains as an option.

More electronics are required in order to manage the battery-electric or hybrid drivetrains, but typically the vehicles use existing RF technology (315 MHz / 433 MHz) for the TPMS sensors. The only current exception is newer Tesla models, which use bluetooth communication for their TPMS systems.

However, the share of new vehicles with automatic TPMS learning continues to grow. Alligator sensors are compatible with modern systems which utilize ABS data for TPMS auto-learning so shops can continue to use the RS+ sensors for most battery-electric and hybrid vehicles.
