Most vehicles use only one TPMS protocol across all trims. However, some cars & trucks use different sensors.
Many qualifiers are easily checked – submodel, engine, production date, build location, coupe vs convertible, transmission type, key style, dually vs 4-wheels, number of lugnuts, base TPMS vs highline display, etc.
But others are more difficult to check, such as sensor frequency. More possibilities are carry-over & new body designs, such as Chevy Silverado 1500 / 1500 LD & Dodge Ram 1500 / 1500 Classic.
It’s possible for one vehicle to use sensors from different manufacturers in the same model year. Example – Schrader or Continental.
Another way to check the sensor protocol is to find the sensor part number when removing the old parts from the wheels.
Programming the sensors incorrectly (wrong vehicle menu) will cause the incorrect firmware to get loaded into the parts and as a result the TPMS warning light to come on when driving.
Paying close attention to any possible qualifiers when programming sensors will reduce the changes of any issues coming up during registration.
